MCP Protocol Explained: How AI Connects to Your Tools

The problem MCP was built to solve

A language model on its own is a closed box. It can write, summarise and reason, but it cannot see your booking calendar, your customer database or your invoicing system. To make it useful for real work, someone has to build a connection between the model and each of those systems.

Until recently every one of those connections was bespoke. If you wanted an assistant that could read your CRM, someone wrote custom code for that CRM. If you then wanted it to read your accounting system too, that was a second, entirely separate piece of work. Multiply by the number of AI tools you might use and the number of systems you run, and the integration effort grows in a way that priced small businesses out entirely.

The Model Context Protocol, introduced by Anthropic and since adopted more widely, is an attempt to standardise that connection. Instead of every AI tool needing custom code for every business system, each system exposes one MCP interface and any MCP-capable assistant can use it.

A useful analogy

Think of it as a standard plug. Before a common standard, every appliance came with its own wiring and its own fitting. Once everyone agreed on a socket shape, manufacturers built to the socket and consumers stopped caring about compatibility.

MCP plays that role between AI assistants and data sources. Your accounting software publishes an MCP server. Your assistant is an MCP client. They connect without either side having been built specifically for the other.

How it works, in the least technical terms possible

Three pieces are involved.

In use, this looks unremarkable. You ask your assistant how many jobs are booked next week. It recognises that it does not know, sees that a calendar server is connected, requests the information, receives it, and answers. The interesting part is that nobody wrote code specifically joining that assistant to that calendar.

Why this matters to a small business

Mostly, it matters indirectly, and that is worth saying plainly. You are unlikely to work with MCP directly, in the same way that you have never thought about the protocol your email client uses to fetch mail. What changes is what becomes affordable.

Integrations that used to be a custom development project become configuration. A tool that connects your quoting system to an assistant no longer needs a developer for weeks. That shifts the economics of automation for businesses that could never justify bespoke software, and it means the useful question to ask any vendor becomes "does it support MCP" rather than "will you build me an integration".

The second effect is portability. Because the interface is standard, swapping the AI assistant while keeping your connections is far less painful than it used to be. That reduces the dependency risk that comes with committing to one vendor's ecosystem.

The honest caveats

It is early. Adoption is real and growing but far from universal, and plenty of the software a local business runs has no MCP support and may never get it. Do not choose a system today on the promise of a future connection.

Security deserves genuine attention. Connecting an assistant to your customer database means it can read your customer database, and anything with permission to write can also write something wrong. Grant read-only access where reading is all you need. Restrict scope to the specific records required rather than everything. Keep a log of what was accessed. Be particularly careful about connecting anything that can send messages or move money.

There is also a subtler risk. If an assistant reads content from an external source, such as an incoming email or a web page, that content may contain text attempting to instruct the assistant. Treat anything the model reads as data rather than commands, and be cautious about giving an assistant both the ability to read untrusted input and the ability to take consequential actions.

What to do about it now

For most owners, the answer is: nothing, beyond awareness. Keep the term in mind when evaluating software, ask whether a vendor supports it, and prefer tools that connect over tools that trap your data. If you are commissioning any AI work, ask whether it is built on standard interfaces or on custom code that only the person who wrote it can maintain.

The underlying principle is older than this protocol and will outlast it. Systems that connect openly are worth more over time than closed ones that work slightly better today, because the cost of changing your mind is where most technology regret actually comes from.

Do I need to understand MCP to use AI in my business?

No. It is infrastructure, roughly comparable to the protocols behind your email, and it works invisibly when it works at all. The only practical reason to know the term is so you can ask software vendors whether they support it, since that answer affects how easily their product will connect to whatever you use next.

Is MCP secure enough for customer data?

The protocol itself is a communication standard; security depends on how it is configured. The controls that matter are granting read-only access where possible, limiting scope to the records genuinely needed, logging what was accessed, and being careful about anything that can send messages or take financial action.

Which AI tools support MCP today?

Support started with Anthropic's own applications and has spread to a growing number of assistants, development tools and business platforms. The list changes month to month, so check current documentation rather than relying on any article. Coverage among small business software specifically remains patchy.

Is this just another standard that will be replaced?

Possibly, and that is a fair scepticism given how many integration standards have come and gone. The mitigation is the same either way: prefer software that lets you export your data and connect through documented interfaces. That principle holds regardless of which particular protocol ends up winning.
